Connect Yahoo Mail to Claude

Learn how to connect your Yahoo Mail inbox to Claude using Connect My Email. Set up an app-specific password and start reading, searching, and cleaning email with AI.

You can connect Yahoo Mail to Claude today using Connect My Email (CME). The setup takes about five minutes: generate an app-specific password in your Yahoo Account Security settings, add your Yahoo address in the CME dashboard, and paste the MCP URL into Claude. Once connected, Claude can read, search, summarize, and help you clean your inbox — all through natural conversation.

Yahoo does not support OAuth for third-party mail clients, so the app-specific password is the required auth method. You never hand over your main Yahoo password; the app password is a separate credential you can revoke at any time.

Who This Is For

This guide is for anyone who uses Yahoo Mail as a primary or secondary inbox and wants to bring AI assistance to their email. That includes people with long-standing Yahoo accounts carrying years of accumulated mail, users who forward other inboxes to Yahoo, and anyone who has been putting off an inbox cleanup because the manual work felt overwhelming.

You do not need to be technical. CME is a hosted service — there is nothing to install locally.

Before You Connect: Generate a Yahoo App-Specific Password

Yahoo requires an app-specific password for any mail client that isn't signing in through Yahoo's own login page. This is a security measure, and it is the correct one to use.

  1. Go to your Yahoo Account settings and navigate to Account Security.
  2. If two-step verification is not enabled, turn it on first — Yahoo requires it before you can generate app passwords.
  3. Scroll to Generate app password, give the password a label (e.g., "Connect My Email"), and click Generate.
  4. Copy the 16-character password. You will not be able to see it again after closing the dialog.

Keep this credential private. You can revoke it from the same Account Security page at any time without affecting your main Yahoo password.

Step-by-Step: Connect Yahoo Mail to CME

  1. Go to connectmyemail.com and sign in or create a free account.
  2. In the CME dashboard, click Add Inbox and select Yahoo Mail (or choose the generic IMAP option).
  3. Enter your full Yahoo email address and paste the app-specific password you generated.
  4. CME connects via IMAP, verifies access, and returns an MCP URL for your inbox.
  5. In Claude, open Settings → Connectors (or the equivalent in your Claude interface), add the MCP URL, and enable it.
  6. Return to a Claude conversation and confirm the connection is live by asking: "What are my most recent emails?"

That is the complete setup. Claude now has access to your Yahoo inbox through CME's read and action tools.

Example Prompts to Try

Once connected, you can use natural language to work with your Yahoo inbox:

  • "Show me all emails from the last 30 days that I haven't opened."
  • "Search my inbox for anything from retailers containing the word 'unsubscribe'."
  • "Run a sweep simulation on my inbox and show me what categories have the most clutter."
  • "Find every newsletter I've received this year and group them by sender."
  • "Draft a reply to the latest message from my landlord."

The Free plan covers read, search, sweep simulation, and sweep reporting up to 25,000 emails per scan. Write actions — drafting, replying, sending, moving, and flagging — are available on the Pro plan ($9/month).

Safety, Privacy, and Yahoo-Specific Notes

CME connects to your inbox read-only by default. Cleanup actions run in simulation first: Claude shows you exactly what it plans to do, and nothing is moved or deleted until you explicitly approve it.

A few Yahoo-specific things worth knowing:

  • App passwords are scoped: the credential you generate only grants mail access. It cannot be used to log into the Yahoo website or access account settings.
  • You can have multiple app passwords: if you want to grant CME access while also using another mail client, each can have its own app password.
  • Revoking access is instant: go back to Yahoo Account Security and delete the app password. CME loses access immediately.
  • IMAP-only: Yahoo's free tier does not expose POP3 by default, and OAuth is not available for third-party clients. IMAP with an app password is the supported path.

CME does not store the content of your emails. Credentials are encrypted at rest. For the full privacy policy, visit the CME website.

FAQ

Does connecting Yahoo Mail to Claude require giving up my Yahoo password?

No. You generate a separate app-specific password in Yahoo Account Security settings. Your main Yahoo password is never entered into CME. You can revoke the app password at any time without changing your main account credentials.

Can Claude delete emails from my Yahoo inbox?

Not without your approval. Cleanup actions — including moves, deletions, and label changes — are proposed by Claude and shown to you as a plan before anything executes. The simulation-first model means you always review before acting.

Is Yahoo Mail supported on the Free plan?

Yes. The Free plan supports one inbox, read and search access, and sweep simulation/reporting for up to 25,000 emails per scan. If you want write actions or to connect additional inboxes, Pro ($9/month) or Power ($25/month) are available.

What if Yahoo rejects my app password?

Double-check that two-step verification is enabled on your Yahoo account — Yahoo requires it before app passwords can be generated. Also confirm you copied the full 16-character string with no extra spaces. If the issue persists, generate a new app password and try again.

Can I connect multiple Yahoo inboxes?

Yes, on Pro (up to 3 inboxes) or Power (up to 10 inboxes). Each inbox requires its own app-specific password.

What is Yahoo's IMAP server address?

Yahoo Mail uses imap.mail.yahoo.com on port 993 with SSL. CME handles this automatically when you select Yahoo as your provider — you do not need to enter server settings manually.
